Hyperpigmentation occur as a result of melanin accumulating in certain areas of the skin, especially on the face. Aging causes changes in distributing melanin that provides color to the skin. Melanin accumulated in one spot causes sun freckles and stains. At times, pigment is dispersed across a large surface, which causes MELASMA.
The most common causes of hyperpigmentation:
- Too much Sun exposure
- Pregnancy, contraceptives, hormonal therapy
- Acne and other inflammatory skin processes
Hyperpigmentation in the superficial layer of the skin occurring after inflammatory processes is easier to treat. The reason for that is the fact that the as the superficial layer of the skin regenerates, the pigment fades. As times goes by, young skin with equal tan appears, with no changes in pigment (e.g post acne dark spots).
We have been performing hyperpigmentation treatments for years, and it is safe to say that there is no universal solution for solving this issue. Between very common chemical peelings and lasers, we choose the laser treatment in most cases. If needed, we combine this treatment with chemical peelings and suitable home care therapy that enables control over melanin production.
