Photodynamic therapy

One of many characteristics of our skin is its natural self-regeneration potential. Photodynamic therapy was invented in an attempt to increase the possibility of skin regeneration. Thanks to this therapy, the metabolism is significantly improved and skin vitality very noticeable.

Photodynamic therapy is also known as LED therapy. This type of therapy was created by NASA. Namely, scientists have noticed that wounds heal slower in a weightless state, due to lack of energy that is needed for the cell to begin the regeneration process. Exposure to certain light wave lengths is needed for a cell to create energy – ATP (adenosine triphosphate). On these scientific foundations prompted the making of the LED torch that is widely used for aesthetic face and body treatments.

Healing power of the LED light

LED therapy includes directing LED light of a specific color onto the skin. Given the fact that each light has its own frequency, it can reach different depths of the skin which enables treating different issues by using this therapy.

Phototherapy has been successfully used in dermatology, physical medicine and rehabilitation. Applying it is simple, very painless and that makes it very popular. Some of the most known LED Light therapies are photodynamic therapy for treating acne, maintaining and improving hair and skin, wound healing stimulation and treating muscle injuries.

Red LED light

Red light has a wave length of 640nm. It Is responsible for collagen production. Red LED light therapy has multiple benefits:

  • Improves aging signs, brings back the glow and health appearance of the skin
  • Decreases inflammatory processes and therefore is used for healing wounds, burns and as a soothing treatment after aggressive and minimally invasive procedures.
  • Decreases muscle soreness, sports injuries pain and rheumatic diseases
  • Prevents increased hair loss.
Blue LED light

Blue light has a wave length of 420nm. Photodynamic therapy is used for treating acne uses blue colored LED light due to its bactericidal effect. Acne are caused by a bacteria Propionibacterium acnes. The effect of the therapy is based on absorption of the light beam by porphyrin, the substance caused by this bacteria. Aminolevulinic acid can be used as an additional photosensibilating agent. The same mechanism significantly reduces the activity of sebaceous glands, which reduces the possibility for acne to reappear.

PREPARATION

Before the LED treatment, during consults, , we establish your individual protocol. Having an individual protocol means we decide which light we are going to use. We can choose between an individual light or a combination of other light frequencies. Additionally, we determine the number of treatments needed, depending on the condition of the skin. For the photodynamic treatment for treating acne, we do 2 treatments a week in a time interval lasting from 4 up to 8 weeks. When the goal is regeneration and biostimulation of the skin, the procedure consisting of 3-5 treatments once a week.

PROCEDURE

Photodynamic therapy lasts from 20 – 30 minutes, and it is very pleasant and relaxing. It can be applied as a sole procedure or after a hygienic face treatment, microdermabrasion and injection treatments. LED therapy is painless, quick and efficient. There is no harmful UVA and UVB radiation. Special peptide masks are sometimes used for increasing the effect of the treatment.

RECOVERY AND CARE

Following the LED treatment, the skin will be sensitive to the UV radiation, and the following precautions should be taken:

  • Use adequate sun protection
  • Avoid direct Sunlight exposure for 48 hours
  • In the following two weeks protect your skin from long sun exposure

There are no unwanted effects or contraindications following the treatment. Temporary redness that appears 48 hours after the treatment is caused if any photosensitive agent (ALA mask) is used for having a better effect of the treatment.
